Finally, Portland has a First Friday event of its own and you have Omarr Johnson to thank. It goes down every First Friday of the month at the Trio Club located at 909 E. Burnside between the hours of 5:30 and 9:30pm. It’s a good end of the week wind down, a way to relax, fluff your afro out and just “enjoy good people.”
Omarr Johnson was born and raised right here in the City of Portland. Having attended King Elementary School and graduating from Wilson, he obtained a Masters Degree from Marylhurst University in 2010. Since he’s from here, he has a sense of what’s missing from Portland’s night scene and did something about it. According to Omarr, Portland seriously lacked a monthly event where Black folks could chill out, network and have a good time. So, he started a Portland version of First Friday, thank you Omarr.
When asked who attends this event, Omarr says, “it has something for everybody.” Participants include working class folks, business owners, community activists/leaders and members of local professional organizations. Primarly, he aims to attract Black people in the Portland metro and surrounding area.
First Friday is a great place to meet like minded people and chop it up over food, drink and music. Who knows, beyond business you may meet your future husband or wife, there’s no telling what can happen when folks get together. However, Omarr is quick to mention he has no intentions of being a match maker.
Whatever your reason, if you are looking for a business or personal connection come out to First Friday, you’ll have a good time so long as you don’t wear a hat, sagging pants and don’t cause no drama! Okay!
